Australian Visas for Those 45 and Older
Australian Visas for Those 45 and Older
It is generally harder to obtain an Australian visa if you are 45 years of age or older. However, there are a few key Australian visas that those older than 44 may apply for and which could be a good option for them to live and work in Australia.
Business Innovation/Significant Investor 188 Visa
The most accessible visa for the 45 years and older age group is the 188 Business Innovation/Significant Investor visa. The 188 visa allows experienced businesspeople and investors to enter Australia to either start a business or to conduct Business Activities, up to the age of 55. The five streams of the 188 visa are the:
Business Innovation stream

482 TSS Visa
Australia’s most popular work visa is the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) 482 work visa. The 482 visa has no age restrictions but is only a temporary visa and generally has no pathway to a permanent visa. The TSS visa has two streams, the Short Term Stream, which lasts up to 2 years, can only be renewed once and does not lead to any permanent visa. The Medium Term Stream can last for up to 4 years and after three years does have an option that can lead to permanent residence but only if you are under the age of 45. Learn more about the TSS 482 Work visa as a possible visa option for you.
Distinguished Talent Visa
Australia has two Distinguished Talent visas, the 124 (applied for from overseas) and the 858 (applied for when you are in Australia). The Distinguished Talent visa is a permanent visa for foreign nationals “with distinguished talent.” This specific talent can be in a profession, a sport, the arts, or in academia and research and must be an “internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement.” Learn more about how the Distinguished Talent visa may be applicable to you.
Partner Visa
If you are in a serious romantic relationship with an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you may be eligible to apply for a Partner visa, which has two streams:
Spouse/de facto
Prospective Marriage (fiance)
