Work and Holiday Visa in Australia for Americans

A Working Holiday (417) visa or a Work and Holiday (462) visa allows foreigners from specific countries aged between 18 and 31 to work anywhere in Australia for one year. Countries whose citizens are currently eligible to apply for one of these visas include Canada, Israel, Italy, Spain, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. Citizens of the United States are eligible to apply for the 462 Work and Holiday visa.

It is now possible for those on a Working Holiday (417) and Work and Holiday (462) visa to extend their visa for up to two more years. These extensions are dependent upon the petitioner having worked in rural Australia. Learn more here.

Please be aware that there is a cap on the number of Working Holiday and Work and Holiday visas granted each year and that there are visa conditions that must be met. Learn more about these two visas.

Australia and America

Australia has had a long and rich relationship with the United States. During World War II, for example, more than 1 million American service personnel were stationed in or travelled through Australia. Of the 9 million visitors to Australia in the year to March 31, 2018, more than 800,000 come from the U.S.A. and spent $3.8 billion during their visits. Today, there are about 90,000 American-born Australian residents.

Why Americans Like to Work and Travel in Australia

Besides the long-term close relations between Australia and the United States, there are numerous other reasons for Americans to travel, live, study and work down under. These reasons include:

*Australians speak English. (Okay, it’s not the Queen’s English but….)

*The climate in Australia is generally warm and hospitable.

*Australia has a wide variety of landscapes, from tropical to plains to mountains to desert.

*Some of Australia’s cities are often voted among the most liveable in the world and feature world class tourist attractions such as sport, art, food, and vistas.

*Australia has numerous world-ranked universities.

*Many world class American films and television shows are filmed in Australia.

*The country needs foreigners to perform specific jobs that cannot be filled locally.

*Australia has many farms that need foreign harvest and fruit picking workers.

*Australian jobs performed by foreigners on a Working Holiday/Work and Holiday visa include hospitality work, au pair jobs, and pub work.

*Australia is one of the safest countries in the world, especially for women.

*And did we mention the thousands of miles of beaches and those furry critters called kangaroos and koalas?
