Jobs in Australia and Occupation Lists
We are often asked if we can help non-Australians find jobs in Australia. We are an immigration consultancy, not an employment or recruitment service. However, we do strongly encourage our clients to study what Occupations are classified by Australian governments as in demand across the country, as these Occupations could be a good visa pathway for successful applicants to live and work in Australia.
These Occupation Lists note the Skilled jobs that are deemed by different Australian governments to be in demand across Australia but which are not being filled by Australians. Because of these labour shortages, visas have been made available for foreign nationals who are experienced in these Occupations and who pass the eligibility requirements.
Skilled Occupation Lists
It can be very beneficial for foreigners to know what jobs are on Australia’s national Occupation Lists and the various state/territory Occupation Lists. To repeat the possible great opportunity here for you: The Occupations on these lists are those that governments in Australia have decided are in high demand and need to be filled, consequently visas have been made available for these Occupations. Links to the Occupation lists for Australia and its eight states and territories follow. Search them carefully for your Occupation.
If your Occupation is on any of these lists, contact Migration Ways to book a consultation to learn if this Occupation is a good possible visa pathway for you to live and work in Australia.
Australia’s National Skilled Occupation Lists
If you click to this page of the Department of Home Affairs and scroll down, there is a search function for you to check if your Occupation is on one of the (national) Skilled Occupation Lists. The search results will also show what visa is linked to this Occupation.
(Please note that in December 2019, the Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business “published a Traffic Light Bulletin outlining proposed changes to the skilled migration occupation lists.”)
State & Territory Occupation Lists
Each Australian state and territory has an Occupation List for jobs that need to be filled in that state. See the links on this page to all the state/territory Occupation Lists or click below on the individual state or territory that interests you.

This list from the ABC is another source for you to learn simply if your Occupation is one of the hundreds of Australian Occupations currently in demand and to also see which visa relates to that Occupation. (Scroll down the article to find the list.)
Specific Australian Skilled & Work Visas for You to Consider
There are various specific Australian Skilled and Work visas that you may be eligible to apply for. Following is more specific information about some of those visas and links to further information about other visas, including their Occupation Lists.
189 Skilled Independent Permanent Visa and the Medium & Long-Term Skills List (MLTSSL)
Applications for a 189 visa must relate to an Occupation that is on the Australian Government’s Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Please read carefully through this list to see if your Occupation is on it. If it is, this is an opportunity for you to request to be invited to apply for this permanent visa. We stress that foreign workers invited to apply for the 189 visa do not need sponsorship from an employer. But also remember that any expressions of interest are rigorously points tested. Search the combined current list of eligible skilled occupations.
